At Redruth School we recognise that attending school regularly and on time has a positive impact on learning, progress and achievement. Excellent attendance and punctuality is the key for our student’s success. For that reason, we must ensure that attendance and punctuality are the highest they possibly can be in order to prepare our students for their future adult life. It is the responsibility of everyone in our school community – parents, staff, students and governors to ensure they achieve this. Therefore, we are committed to monitoring and reviewing the attendance of all our students regularly.

Punctuality

Lateness = Lost Learning = Minutes amount to days

Students should arrive at the school for no later than 8.25am. Registration begins at 8.30am and form tutors electronically take the first register of the day. Students must report to the reception office to sign in if they arrive after this time. Arriving late, after registration, without a legitimate reason will be recorded as an unauthorised absence. If a student needs to leave school early they need to bring a note to show their form tutor and make sure they show the note to student reception and sign out when they leave. The school will contact you if we have concerns about punctuality and ask that you support our detention procedures re: student lateness.

Recent research has demonstrated that there is a clear link between poor attendance at school and lower academic achievements.

96% attendance is the minimum target at Redruth School. Students with attendance of less than this are at risk of underachievement.

Percentage Weeks Absent over One School Year Weeks Absent over Five School Years
96 % 1 week 6 weeks
95 % 2 weeks 10 weeks
90 % 4 weeks 19 weeks
85 % 5.5 weeks 29 weeks
80% 7.5 weeks 39 weeks

Research has shown that 17 days absence in a year =

A drop of one grade at GCSE

Reporting an Absence

If your child is unable to attend school you must:

  • Contact us as soon as possible on the first day of absence, preferably before 9.00am. Please make sure you state your child’s name, form group and the reason for absence
  • Or, you can call into school and report an absence to reception
  • Continue to notify the school every day that your child is absent
  • Send a note in on the first day they return with an explanation of the absence – you must do this even if you have already telephoned us
  • Provide a copy of the appointment card for doctor, hospital or dental appointments upon their return.

If your child is absent we will:

  • Telephone or text you on every day of absence if we have not heard from you
  • Invite you in to discuss the situation with our Attendance Officer or Pastoral Head of Year if absences persist
  • May refer to the Education Welfare Service if attendance falls below 90%

Behaviour

Through the overall school aims we strive to develop a trusting and caring environment, based upon mutual respect and understanding where all people are treated fairly. The school ethos is based on these aims and around the qualities of care, courtesy, consideration and common sense.

Rights and Responsibilities

Teachers have the right to teach, and students have the right to learn in a classroom free from disruptive behaviour.

Teachers are responsible for establishing the rules and directions which clearly define the limits of acceptable and unacceptable student behaviour. Students are responsible for maintaining good order in the school by following the rules and directions set by the school.

Students are expected to:

Behave in an orderly, purposeful and sensible manner at all times. Show courtesy and respect to all members of the school and visitors to the school. Be thoughtful, helpful and understanding to each other at all times.

 School Trips and Visits

The agreed rules apply to all students. Staff will deal firmly and fairly with misbehaviour wherever it occurs. A record of incidents will be kept and will inform future participation. Incidents of serious misbehaviour on school visits will always be reported to parents, and may result in permission to take part in future trips being withdrawn.
