Tesco Takeover!

Posted on: 01/12/2025

On Tuesday 25 November students in Year 7 ‘took over’ our local Tesco branch, as part of their business and enterprise day. Students were set a real-world work experience challenge by Martin, the manager of Tesco Redruth, to design a new Breakfast Meal Deal for Tesco stores. In small teams, students learnt about healthy breakfasts, decide on a target market, calculated the cost of potential ideas, investigated how to reduce food and packaging waste, designed sustainable packaging and created a slogan and 2-minute pitch for their concept breakfast main. As part of the day tutor groups visited Tesco Redruth to research possible drinks and snacks to accompany their main and to complete a Q&A with Tesco staff members.

Students conducted market research in their tutor group; to narrow down their designs and to vote for the overall winner. The winners then went head-to-head ‘Dragons’ Den’ style to pitch their final idea in front of the whole Year 7 cohort and Tesco representatives Sarah and James. It was a tough decision but Alia B and Hazel O from 7ROG were victorious with their amazing ‘Full English Melt’ sandwich in hashbrown or baked bean editions, which Tesco staff felt would be the most marketable idea. Our winners each received a voucher for free Tesco Meal Deals for a week, plus their concept is being passed to Tesco Head Office who will consider whether to put the idea into production as a nationwide limited edition, so the ‘Full English Melt’ may be appearing on Tesco shelves in the future.

We are grateful to Tesco Redruth and Tesco Head Office for collaborating with us on this fantastic work experience opportunity.
