Parent guidance on how to support your child with their Music GCSE
GCSE Music Board: Pearson Edexcel
Course Description: The course furthers the key concepts in Music developed in years 7-9. They are split into three essential musical skills of performing (playing your instrument), composing (utilising music technology to write music) and listening (encompassing critical engagement and cultural awareness). Each of these skills are systematically taught and assessed through the study of four areas of study:
1. Instrumental Music from 1700 to 1820
2. Vocal Music
3. Music for Stage and Screen
4. Fusions
Performing (coursework – 30%): You will need to prepare two performances during Year 11 – one solo and one ensemble. These will be performed between January and March.
Composing (coursework – 30%): Building on your composing exercises in Year 10, you will complete two longer compositions in Year 11. One of these will be from a brief set by the exam board relating to one of the above Areas of Study. The other will be developed from one of your year 10 pieces. Each piece will be around two minutes long. You will complete one in the autumn term and one in the spring term.
Listening (exam – 40%): You will finish analysing the set works for this paper and will continue to practice the short answer exam questions. You will also revisit all of the set works and learn about their context in more detail – the period and culture in which they were composed, where they were performed, how audiences received them and the stylistic trends that they exemplify. This will prepare you for the longer essay-style exam question.
Easter Coursework/Revision: A Easter session will run on Thursday 13 April from 10:10am-12:00pm.
At Redruth School we run the GCSE course in Music offered by the Edexcel Exam Board: www.edexcel.com
Extra support sessions: Students are invited to attend the KS4 GCSE Music revision session after school on Tuesday P6 and Fridays from 3-4pm. Students can also work in the Music Department most evenings after school until 4pm.

Top Tips for a successful exam unit:
• Students will be set regular deadlines, please encourage your child to complete this work by the set deadline. The tasks are often used to help improve research work in preparation for the next practical session in the classroom or will be an extension of work completed at school.
• Encourage your child to listen to the studied set-works as much as possible, to enable them to get used to the different features they may be asked about in the exam.
• Provide a space at home where work can be laid out and worked on.
• Encourage your child to create a diary / checklist of the tasks that need to be completed.
• Encourage them to communicate with their teacher their ideas and any concerns they have.
• Don’t allow your son/daughter to leave their revision until the last minute or their Practical Performance tasks.
Any challenges please do not hesitate to contact: Mr Souter nsouter@redruth.cornwall.sch.uk
