This week there have been events across the UK to mark Holocaust Memorial Day. This international day on 27 January remembers the six million Jews murdered during the Holocaust, and marks the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi death camp.

Year 9 students along with History teachers Mrs Moore and Mrs Goy joined in on a live webcast with Holocaust survivor Eve Kugler, BEM that was broadcast across the whole country. Eve was born in Germany, and was seven years old in 1938 when Kristallnacht – the night of the broken glass – took place. Her family was torn apart by the Nazis, her parents survived concentration camps, her youngest sister forced into hiding, and Eve and her other sister sent to America and into foster homes. Remarkably, they were all reunited in 1946.

Students were asked to make notes during the webcast, and then joined their teacher for a reflective discussion over Teams, with a question and answer session, exploring what they had heard. The students were very moved by Eve's honest and emotional account of her childhood.
