Cornwall Excellence Awards 2019 Winners

Posted on: 07/05/2019

The University of Exeter, Penryn Campus Excellence Awards ceremony took place on Thursday 2 May, to celebrate the achievements of young people in Cornwall.

Due to the success and popularity of the awards in previous years, the annual awards evening held on campus to recognise excellence amongst local schoolchildren has been expanded to include more schools. This reflects the increasing scope of the University’s work in Cornwall. Seven secondary schools took part this year: Redruth School, Falmouth School, Helston Community College, Mullion School, Penryn College, Camborne Science & International Academy and Pool Academy.

Over 60 awards were presented to students from across Cornwall, rewarding them for Academic Achievement and Positive Contribution to their school or community.  The students were recognised for their achievements at various stages of their educational journey. Locryn from Redruth School received the Star of the Year award for  demonstrating exceptional achievements this academic year. Other winners from Redruth School were Chantelle, Jack, Morta, Adam, Ellen, Erin and Max.

Locryn’s Star of the Year award was given for representing his year group at School Council, which meant he had to increase his confidence in public speaking. A very surprised Locryn said, “I’m ecstatic. For it to be me, out of all the other students here tonight is crazy!”

Several hundred parents, teachers, school representatives, and VIPs including local mayors and dignitaries, joined senior members of University staff to celebrate the hard-won achievements of the young people in the county.

Jane Chafer, Director of Communications and Corporate Affairs, who hosted the event said, “The University of Exeter is committed to working with students from Cornwall in raising aspirations and supporting progression.  As a University, we take our role within our local community seriously, and work with our education and community partners to inspire and encourage students to progress on to higher education. I wish these opportunities had existed when I went to school in Cornwall.”

She added “To be recognised for your hard work at a University ceremony is really very special, so this evening is a night to celebrate all that the students have achieved.”

Richard Prest, Outreach Officer, University of Exeter Penryn Campus, said: “The Excellence Awards provide an opportunity to give public recognition to the fantastic accomplishments of young people from Cornwall.  By working in partnership, the University hopes to continue to encourage the young people of Cornwall to keep on learning.”

The University of Exeter works with schools across Cornwall and Devon to raise aspirations and inspire students to do their best. As well as the Excellence Awards, students also participate in a range of activities with the University of Exeter throughout the year, providing them with insight into studying at university.

Craig Martin, Headteacher of Redruthy School, said  “I am delighted that our young people have been recognised for their effort, diligence and positive attitude towards themselves and their community".
